History of NHGSFP

The National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) was established in 2005, under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, with the aim to improve the health and educational outcomes of public primary school pupils. It also focuses on local farmers produce to provide children with nutritious mid-day meals on every school day, beginning with 12 states selected from the six geopolitical zones.

  • The programme was suspended in 2007 after two years of implementation due to inadequate planning, poor strategies and lack of resources.
  • It was reintroduced in 2016 by President Muhamudu Buhari, with the focus to improve primary school enrolment, reduction of out of school children and addressing nutrition challenges common among school children.

In 2024, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu restructured the NHGSFP through his RENEWED HOPE AGENDA, with the aim to feed over 10 Million Nigerian Pupils and reduce the out of school Children under the able leadership of the just appointed National Program Manager Dr Princess Adebowale Aderemi which on the mandate of the President renamed the program as the RENEWED HOPE – NATIONAL HOME GROWN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM (RH-NHGSFP)

Vision Statement

To cultivate a healthier and more educated generation by way of reducing poverty through an holistic approach to school feeding, by supporting small holders farmers through locally sourced food vis a vis fostering national growth

Mission Statement

To provide daily nutritious meals to public primary school pupils using locally-grown farm produce, thereby enhancing children's health, increasing school attendance, and supporting local farmers, while contributing to the overall economic and social development of Nigeria.

Objective Statement (OB)

To implement a sustainable school feeding initiative that ensures every public primary school child receives a nutritious meal daily, sourced from local farmers, thereby improving educational outcomes and fostering community economic growth.

Outcome-Based Goal (CALSO):

By 2025, achieve a 20% increase in school enrollment and attendance rates, and a 15% improvement in students’ academic performance in participating schools, while providing a stable market for local farmers, resulting in a 10% rise in their annual income.

Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale: A Visionary Leader in Public Service and Humanitarian Endeavors

Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale is an accomplished humanitarian and dedicated public servant, currently spearheading the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Program (RH-NHGSFP) as its National Program Manager. In this pivotal role, she directs national strategies aimed at enhancing child nutrition, welfare, and academic achievement across Nigeria. Her leadership is a testament to her profound commitment to the well-being of Nigerian children and her drive to establish sustainable social protection mechanisms, notably through the fight against malnutrition. This commitment is further exemplified by her latest initiative, launched on May 27, 2025: the Renewed Hope National Home Grown School Feeding Program, Alternate Education and National Identity Management Commission Project, themed “Food Security Meets National Security”. Dr. Adebowale is also recognized for her creative and critical thinking skills and her aptitude for problem-solving, which are instrumental in her strategic leadership.

A Distinguished Career in Governance and Community Empowerment

Prior to her current engagement, Dr. Adebowale held significant positions within public service. She served as the Sole Administrator of Iru-Victoria Island from 2015 to 2017 and subsequently as the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Civic Engagement from 2019 to 2023. During her tenure, she masterminded impactful civic programs that positively influenced over 12,000 families and individuals statewide. A notable initiative, The Womb to School, is built on five pillars, with Mother, Infant and Child Development (MICHD2050) being the first and foundational element. This initiative addresses security from conception through proper nutritional interventions. Her unwavering focus on inclusive governance and community empowerment is evident in her advocacy as a voice for the underserved and a champion of participatory public service.

Robust Academic and Professional Foundation

Dr. Adebowale’s extensive academic and professional background provides a solid bedrock for her diverse expertise. She holds an advanced degree, including a PhD in Public Health, and is currently pursuing a second doctorate in Early Childhood. An expert and professionally registered nurse who owns a nursing home and nursing agency in the USA, she also serves as a Director of Finance in the U.S. due to her background in Finance and Business Law. Dr. Adebowale specializes in oncology, dialysis, geriatric, and psychiatric nursing.

Her experience as a distinguished educator spans Nigeria, Cameroon, and the United States. This unique convergence of medical acumen, academic rigor, and practical experience has enabled her to design and implement highly impactful and sustainable people-centered programs in health, mental health, and education.

Philanthropic Initiatives and Political Engagement

Beyond her public service contributions, Dr. Adebowale is the visionary founder of several social enterprises and non-governmental organizations, including the Debor Zero Hunger Foundation. Her work through these platforms directly addresses key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to hunger eradication (SDG 2), education access (SDG 4), and poverty alleviation (SDG 1).

She also hosts ‘Askprincess Consults’, a talk show on LTV8, Lagos, and is a Sunday columnist in The Nation newspaper, proffering solutions to lifestyle issues and relationships. These endeavors reflect her profound dedication to social justice and equitable development, addressing SDG 3 and 16.

Politically, Dr. Adebowale has played instrumental roles in high-profile campaigns and occupied significant leadership positions. She contested for the House of Representatives thrice under the Epe Federal Constituency. She served on the Transition Committee from ACN to APC under Chief Henry Ajomale, and she co-coordinated the event of South-West and Yoruba leaders of thought in support of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023 under the leadership of Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi. She was also a member of the blueprint committee led by the late Chief Mrs. Kemi Nelson. Furthermore, she was the South-West Zonal Secretary for the Social & Humanitarian Directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council for the All Progressive Congress Party. She is the convener of Tinubu Is Key (2023–2027, 2027–2031) and a co-convener of the AROMA Group for Tinubu (Northern Group). Despite residing in the United States for nearly three decades, her unwavering contributions to political mobilization underscore her exceptional skills in policy advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and grassroots coordination.

In addition to her medical, educational, humanitarian, administrative, and political accomplishments, Dr. Princess Adebowale is a recognized international public speaker, published author, media personality, and life coach consultant. Her influential voice resonates globally as she continues to shape public discourse on critical issues and human capital development at large, such as malnutrition, security, early childhood education, women’s and youth empowerment, and community building — taking on one community at a time. Dr. Adebowale’s keen focus on the Sustainable Development Goals — 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) — is truly exceptional. Her outstanding contributions to humanitarian work, political engagement, and community development have garnered her numerous local and international awards.
